Frederick Gilbert Owens, well-loved husband, father, grandfather and friend, passed away Jan. 12. A resident of Indiana his entire life, he and his wife Barbara spent nearly 50 years together enjoying nature and all that god has to offer. Always a Volkswagen enthusiast, Fred never met a "bug" he didn't like. A well-known businessman in Danville for over 20 years as the owner of the local Pizza King franchise, he made "the best pizza in the USA" until her retired in 2000 and was lovingly know as "pizza grandpa" by his grandchildren. In his earlier years he was a Navy veteran, a frozen food salesman, in management with Preston-Safeway and an insurance agent with American Family.
Fred is survived by his wife Barbara Kemp Owens; his sisters Barbara (Robert) Courtney of Wanamaker and Phyllis Johnson of Indianapolis; son Rick (Yvonne) Owens of Austin, TX; daughter Robin (Harry) Nelson of Kettering, OH; son-in-law Brian (Ginger) Arnot of Pittsboro; 7 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence A. and Carrie H. Owens, his daughter Ginger Arnot and sister Katherine (Harold) Gregory.
Fred's arrangements are being handled by Weaver & Randolph Funeral Home in Danville, and his remains will be created according to his wishes. There will be no funeral, but a memorial service will be held on his 81st birthday, March 4, at Bartlett Chapel United Methodist Church, 4396 E. Main St., Avon, at 10:30 a.m. He was a member of the chapel. All are welcome.
