Michael's Story

Text size

Michael Frederick Singer, 68, passed away peacefully December 25, 2017, the day after he was able to participate in one of his favorite longstanding traditions, the Christmas Eve gathering with his loving children.
Mike was the first child born to Harold Frederick and Winifred Singer and lived with them in Chesterton, Indiana, until he graduated from high school and left to attend Indiana University. Because he planned to marry his high school sweetheart, Nancy Oddi, the summer before his senior year at college, he dropped out in early 1969 to return home and work at Gary National Tube for a semester. However, this was the height of the Vietnam War, and Uncle Sam had other ideas. Mike soon was wearing Army green and training to be a Military Policeman. Wedding plans were changed to the fall and Mike eventually became a Sergeant E-5 Provost Marshall and was stationed first at Savanna Army Depot (IL) and then at Seneca Army Depot (NY).
Christmas 1971 brought a reduction of forces and Mike was released from the Army early and returned to Indiana University to finish his undergraduate education. After graduation Mike worked at Public Service of Indiana (now Duke) working his way up the management and corporate ranks while he also worked to earn his Doctor of Jurisprudence from the Indiana University School of Law in Indianapolis. In 1980 he was admitted to the Bar in Indiana and began fulltime practice in Danville. In 1988 he purchased his own office building in Avon and his practice quickly grew. He soon became well-known for his persistence and his passionate and through defense of his clients. He loved being an attorney and always felt that one of his biggest business accomplishments was his ability to maintain a private practice in Avon for over 30 years.
Although he eventually limited his practice to only criminal matters, during his 38 years of law practice he handled almost every type of case and was as well-known in the surrounding counties as he was in Hendricks County. He also served as an elected member of the Washington Township Advisory Board, been a Judge Pro-Tem in both Hendricks and Marion counties, and as attorney to the Hendricks County Welfare Board/ Department of Child Services, Washington Township Advisory Board, as well as the Washington Township Park Board. He was member and Past President of the Hendricks County Bar Association and a member of Indiana Public Defenders Council.
Mike's interest in the law was a natural complement to his interest in historical documents and events. He was an avid amateur historian and a collector of political autographs and memorabilia. He held membership in several historical organizations including APIC, the Indiana Historical Society, and the Indiana Landmarks Society. His friends knew he could always be counted on to know details about most historical figures and many family vacations became enjoyable American History tours.
Left to honor Mike and cherish his memory are his wife of 48 years, Nancy Oddi Singer; daughter, Beth Perry (Todd)of Mooresville and grandchildren Megan and Dan; son, Matthew Frederick Singer (Jacqui) of Chicago and new grandson, Connor Frederick Singer. He is also survived by his brother Mark (Alvina) of Chesterton and sister Mary Beth Blythe (Stuart) of Lansing Michigan.
Visitation will be 3pm-8pm Friday December 29, 2017 at Conkle Funeral Home in Avon. The Funeral Service will be conducted on Saturday December 30, 2017 at 11:30 a.m. at the Funeral Home with additional Visitation from 10:30 AM until the time of the Funeral Service. Interment will be at West Ridge Park Cemetery at 9295 W 21st St. Online condolences may be shared with the family at www.conklefuneralhome.com.
